This pattern is featured in the book Knit a Little by Marie Greene.

Like so many of my knitting ideas, this one happened on a long flight home with scraps of yarn and a sketch on a sticky note. I remember a lot of frogging (ripping it out) due to poor lighting, but I had an unlimited supply of stroopwafel to get me through it. Now that I think about it, it might’ve actually been the stroopwafel that inspired this design, but I’m not sure I want to admit that out loud. The detail is easy to spice up with multiple colors or gradients, or you can create a color block effect by using your contrast for all of the ribbing, if you have enough.

SKILL LEVEL: Advanced Beginner

SIZES: 6-12 mo (1-2 yrs, 2-4 yrs, 4-6 yrs, 6-8 yrs, 8-10 yrs) referred to as sizes 1 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) throughout pattern

YARN: Worsted weight| Cascade 220 | 100% superwash wool | 220 yards/200 meters in 100 g

  • MC: (Teal) 310 (320, 450, 520, 700, 730) yards/283 (293, 411, 475, 640, 667) meters
  • CC: (Grey) 60 (65, 70, 75, 80, 85) yards/55 (59, 64, 69, 73, 78) meters


Note: Yardage is an estimate and may vary based on your gauge (especially row gauge) and yarn choice. If in doubt, please round up.

NEEDLES

  • US Size 6/4mm (16-24 in/40-60 cm) circular needle – body
  • US Size 6/4mm (12 in/30 cm) circular needle or DPNs – sleeves
  • US Size 5/3.75mm (16-24 in/40-60 cm) circular needle – bottom ribbing
  • US Size 4/3.5mm (16 in/40 cm) circular needle – neckline
  • US Size 4/3.5mm DPNs – sleeve cuffs


Note: Adjust your needle size, if necessary, to obtain correct gauge.

GAUGE: 20 st and 26 rows in 4 in/10 cm in stockinette stitch with largest needle, blocked

Note: Use both yarn colors in your swatch – and wet block it before you begin – to check for possible color transfer.
