Shopping for yarn when you’re tired is a lot like grocery shopping when you’re hungry, though I’ve never regretted any of the yarn that joined my stash under these conditions. One such unplanned yarn purchase grew up to become a proper Gansey, complete with a sea of delicious, twisty cables and fancy underarm gussets. This smaller version of the original is pared down for simplicity making it perfect for little ones. There’s just enough detail to keep it interesting, without slowing you down. Don’t let the rich cables fool you – they’re easier than they look.

SKILL LEVEL: Advanced Beginner

SIZES: 6-12 mo (1-2 yrs, 2-4 yrs, 4-6 yrs, 6-8 yrs, 8-10 yrs) referred to as sizes 1 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) throughout pattern

YARN: Worsted weight | Malabrigo Rios | 100% superwash merino | 210 yards/192 meters in 100 g | 330 (341, 484, 550, 748, 770) yards/302 (312, 442, 503, 684, 704) meters

Note: Yardage is an estimate and may vary based on your gauge (especially row gauge) and yarn choice. If in doubt, please round up.

NEEDLES

  • US Size 6/4mm (16-24 in/40-60 cm) circular needle – body
  • US Size 6/4mm (12 in/30 cm) circular needle or DPNs – sleeves
  • US Size 5/3.75mm (16-24 in/40-60 cm) circular needle – bottom ribbing
  • US Size 5/3.75mm DPNs – sleeve cuffs
  • US Size 4/3.5mm (12-16 in/30-40 cm) circular needle – neckline


Note: Adjust your needle size, if necessary, to obtain correct gauge.

GAUGE

  • 20 st and 24 rows in 4 in/10 cm in stockinette stitch with largest needle, blocked
  • 22 st and 26 rows in 4 in/10 cm in cable pattern with largest needle, blocked
